Jay Johnstone’s life drawing and painting practice centres on the human figure, explored through a series of expressive compositions all drawn live from a real models  . His approach fuses the raw emotional intensity with the gestural freedom of Abstract Expressionism, resulting in works that feel immediate, energetic and deeply felt.

Johnstone’s technique is defined by bold, expressive brushstrokes and textural interplay that convey movement and vitality rather than precise anatomical detail. Subtle colour plays a central role, particularly his striking use of red tints, which charges his figures with warmth, passion and presence. Through this vivid palette and dynamic handling of paint and texture, the female form emerges with both sensitivity and power.

Rather than simply recording appearance, Jay seeks to capture the essence of his model, celebrating the beauty and inner strength of the figure. His medium-sized canvases balance spontaneity with compositional confidence, creating vibrant, sophisticated works that bring emotional depth and visual energy to any interior or art collection.
