Front cover illustration from the Suntup Artist edition of  Titus Groan

From the crumbling towers of Gormenghast, the pen and walnut ink illustration captures a sprawling vista rendered in warm sepia tones. Delicate crosshatching builds shadow and texture across weathered stone battlements in the foreground, while below, the city of carvers unfolds in a maze of crooked rooftops and narrow alleys, each line etched with meticulous, almost obsessive detail. The ink washes fade toward the horizon, suggesting the vast, shadowed reaches of the kingdom of Groan beyond. Gothic spires and crumbling masonry dominate the composition, evoking decay and grandeur intertwined-a world ancient, insular, and steeped in melancholy atmosphere.
