Thorin earned his epithet “Oakenshield” during the Battle of Azanulbizar in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, fought outside Moria’s gates.
When his weapon was destroyed and his shield lost in the fighting, Thorin snatched up a broken branch of oak to use as an improvised shield, rallying dwarves around him with it held aloft like a standard. Wielding this makeshift defense, he fought off the orc chieftain Azog and survived the brutal battle. His kinsmen, impressed by his resourcefulness and courage under such dire circumstances, thereafter called him “Oakenshield”-a name that stuck for the rest of his life, symbolizing his resilience.
