Gandalf and the fellowship had previously entered Moria through the East-gate while searching for Balin—to check on the fledgling Dwarven colony—and for Gollum, whom he wanted to question about Bilbo’s ring. He found no one there. Leaving through the Doors of Durin on the western side, he only had to open them from the inside, so he never needed the password himself. This explains why, standing before those same doors with the Fellowship years later, Gandalf struggled to recall how to open them—admitting “‘I have no memory of this place at all! ‘ and was too weary to decide what to do.
