Description

Éowyn is a noblewoman of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings who identifies herself as a shieldmaiden. Alongside the hobbit Merry Brandybuck, she rides into the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and slays the Witch-King of Angmar, fulfilling the prophecy that he could not be killed by any man. Scholars have linked her courtship by Faramir to Tolkien’s own experience of WWI war brides, and regard her as one of the story’s few strong female characters—particularly in Peter Jackson’s films, where Miranda Otto’s portrayal gives her a more romantic role than Tolkien originally wrote.
